Painting Reflection

Out of all the art days, I've enjoyed painting the most since it felt fulfilling. I've always struggled with compositions, and the idea of using collage is very new and interesting to me. Not only did I generate a narrative way quicker, but I was also very satisfied with how it looked. Even if I wasn't painting exactly what was on the collage, there is lots to take from it into a painting- the color scheme, forms and shapes, etc. Though the class required us to do 3 collages, I've only created 2 since I spent a long time. This is good practice for me to think quicker, but I was absolutely satisfied with both of them. Having used a more macabre and vibrant look to the first one (my usual art style), I tried using a darker/ vintage color scheme for the second. Inspired by Hew Locke's massive crowds and Uzo Egonu's symbolist style, I tried to create a narrative from ideas of energy and interlinked fates. The three expressionless faces at the top have moved on while a woman struggles to reconcile with her lost past. Homesickness is horrifying to me, as it is an erasure of history and identity, also being an inner battle assimilating to a foreign culture. The chained woman looks as if she dropped something, being swept away by others. I love my varied use of textures, yet the pink red gradients were unnecessary to me. I didn't like how the white background stands out, but I there was so much potential to fill these spaces with something..
